This year we have a large number of students starting YLE-Starters so this month and next month I’d like to provide some background and advice about making the most of this unique and perennially popular English language program.
YLE has been running since 2011 and has developed over the years into a very comprehensive course covering many aspects of English. These include, but are not limited to, speaking, writing, listening, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, English study skills and reading.
YLE was meant as an “ambitious” course when it was designed. It is a huge step up from Phonics 3 and a huge challenge for students as young as 9 or 10 (we originally designed it for 11~13 year olds). In fact, many native children of 9 years of age would struggle with some of the YLE activities!
The reason for the volume is that we have many mothers who want us to have a program that could genuinely prepare kids for an adulthood where they live and work abroad. To serve their needs, the logic was always “too much is better than too little” so however ambitious a child or a family wish to be, it is possible with YLE.
That means that to do everything on the course comprehensively and thoroughly you would need to be studying as much as an hour a day, 5 days a week. We understand that is not realistic for all parents and children. We are also aware that different kids enjoy different parts of YLE (some love reading, some love listening, some love writing, some love pronunciation and so on).
So, please make the best of YLE by sticking to what you like the most. No-one should feel pressure to finish it all and no-one should feel overwhelmed. Please do what you enjoy and enjoy what you do!
